Have you ever seen an image like this?

If you have, then you have already seen mapping mashup technology at work!
Mapping Mashups use online mapping services such as those offered by Google or Yahoo!, to display customized, clickable markers showing points of interest and related information. In the classroom, they can place lessons in a rich geographical context and increase interactivity. They can be useful for spatial display of research data or for enhancing information on campus Websites (Educause Learning Initiative--Abstract of "7 Things You Should Know About Mapping Mashups").

Hi Ahenryst,
I have utilized Yahoo! maps personally for driving instructions and interactive online maps in some of my classroom lessons. I even viewed my residence and neighborhood using Google maps. However, reading about Mapping Mashups and its implications for educators, takes this to a completely different level. I was not aware that so much information can be accessed in utilizing this technology. Just reading about the knowledge that can be gained by students in social studies, history, science, etc. is quite fascinating. There is just so much technology out there. I'm not in the library yet. However, as a SLMS, I hope to inform as many teachers as I can about ways to enhance their curriculum through technology.
This is a wonderful technology. I have utilized Yahoo! and Google maps before but did not realize they went by the name, Mapping Mashups. I am excited to use this technology once my own library is built. I also want to share this knowledge and let my teachers that I work with learn about this so they are able to utilize this technology as well.
hello Ahenryst,
I found your article very enlighting. This week alone I used to map services for information, the first family watch dog, and the second mapquest. But the mapping mashups is great. I wished I would of learned about it earlier when I was a social studies teacher.
Using this tool in class would of been a great motivator and would of enriched the learning. I was disappointed to learn the map services only caters to North America and Europe. Our country is to rich with both technology and economics to have only these two areas covered.
Great introduction to Mapping Mashups! I look forward to hearing more about everyone's experiences using this information technology to enhance instruction.
